I've adored its feature rich content and presentation ever since release but I kept dropping the game, probably because so much of the design and economy of the game felt like it imposed so many barriers early on. I've got 127 hours logged on Steam and I still have difficulties closing a single loop.Īs a fan of both Isaac and Throne, it definitely took me way longer than expected to warm up to Gungeon.

While RNG is still plays a big factor in your runs it by far feels like it has the biggest amount of raw difficulty out of any of these games. It's not as feature rich but I'd definitely say it's the most dense roguelite on the market. Throne is much more "arcade" oriented than Gungeon, there's way less focus on progression, unlocks and secrets (though there are plenty of those) and more about what's eventually going to croak your run. The environments are definitely on the simpler side but that's in part because of the RNG design and the fact that unlike Gungeon the levels are malleable (blow up walls to create cover in levels etc). There are people who still croak to Lil' Hunter on the regular before even managing to do a loop, and that's to say nothing of the post-loop bosses.

Click to shrink.Nuclear Throne's bosses are absolutely mental and are most certainly not an after-thought.
